India Ranks First in Business Climate Among 41 Global Markets

India has been ranked first for business climate among 41 global markets in the 2026 Global Business Climate Survey conducted by Business Sweden together with the Swedish Chambers of Commerce and Sweden’s diplomatic missions. The survey captures the experiences and views of Swedish companies operating across international markets.

The result places India at the top of the survey’s global ranking, with Ireland and Vietnam also among the highest-rated markets. The 2026 edition is the largest so far, covering 41 markets worldwide.

India Leads Global Business Climate Ranking

The latest survey found India to have the most favourable business climate among the 41 markets covered.

Business Sweden said the survey reflects the perspectives of Swedish business leaders overseas, rather than a general ranking of every country’s economy. More than 2,250 C-level representatives of Swedish companies participated globally and responded to 18 standard questions about the business climate in their main markets.

The findings provide insight into how international businesses view operating conditions, growth opportunities and investment prospects across different markets.

Strong Confidence Among Swedish Companies

The India ranking comes alongside positive views from Swedish companies operating in the country.

Business Sweden’s India-specific 2026 survey found that Swedish companies in India continued to report strong financial performance and high growth expectations, while a clear majority planned to increase investments in the coming year.

The Swedish Chamber of Commerce India has also highlighted continued optimism among more than 200 Swedish companies operating in India, although businesses continue to identify regulatory complexity, trade barriers and localisation requirements as challenges.

Survey Covers 41 Global Markets

The 2026 Global Business Climate Survey expanded its coverage to 41 markets, five more than the previous edition. New markets included Ireland, Kenya, Nigeria, Argentina and Slovakia.

The markets covered span Western Europe, Asia-Pacific, the Middle East and Africa, and the Americas, allowing Swedish companies’ perceptions of different operating environments to be compared.

India’s first-place position therefore reflects its standing within a broad group of international markets.

India Among the Most Positive Markets in Asia-Pacific

The Asia-Pacific region recorded some of the strongest business sentiment in the 2026 survey.

Business Sweden identified India, Ireland and Vietnam as the top three markets in its global assessment, with India leading the overall business-climate ranking.

The results indicate that Swedish companies continue to see opportunities across Asian markets despite broader global economic and geopolitical uncertainty.

Investment Intentions Remain Strong

Investment plans were another important element of the global survey.

Across all markets, 44% of Swedish companies said they planned to increase investments during the next 12 months. Business Sweden said Asia-Pacific was leading capital allocation compared with Europe and the Americas.

India’s strong position in the survey therefore comes at a time when Swedish businesses continue to evaluate expansion and investment opportunities outside their home market.

Global Uncertainty Remains a Factor

The positive assessment of India comes against a backdrop of continued geopolitical and economic uncertainty.

Business Sweden reported that 80% of Swedish companies globally maintained a neutral or positive assessment of the business climate. At the same time, 64% reported profitability and 65% expected industry turnover to increase over the following year.

The survey also noted that the geopolitical environment, including the war in the Middle East, affected business sentiment during the survey period.

This context is important because the India ranking reflects business perceptions collected during a period of significant international uncertainty.

What Swedish Companies See in India

The findings point to several factors influencing Swedish companies’ views of India.

India’s large domestic market, growth prospects and expanding industrial and technology ecosystem have contributed to its appeal for international companies. The India Business Climate Survey has previously highlighted opportunities in areas including smart manufacturing, green technology, advanced healthcare and fintech.

The 2026 global survey similarly shows that Swedish companies continue to identify India as a market with strong business opportunities and investment potential.

Challenges Still Remain

The first-place ranking does not mean that Swedish companies see no challenges in India.

The Swedish Chamber of Commerce India has specifically noted regulatory complexity, trade barriers and localisation requirements as factors influencing how Swedish businesses approach the Indian market.

The survey therefore provides a mixed but broadly positive picture: businesses report confidence and growth opportunities while also identifying areas where operating conditions can become more complex.

India and Sweden Strengthen Business Ties

Swedish companies have maintained a long-standing presence in India, with bilateral commercial ties spanning manufacturing, technology, healthcare, sustainability and other sectors.

Business Sweden’s 2025 India survey, based on responses from more than 200 Swedish companies operating in India, found that 77% of respondents had a positive view of India’s business climate at that time.

The latest global ranking adds another data point showing how Swedish businesses currently assess India’s commercial environment relative to other international markets.

Looking Ahead

India’s business climate ranking at the top of the 2026 Global Business Climate Survey places the country first among 41 global markets assessed from the perspective of Swedish companies.

The result comes alongside strong reported financial performance and investment intentions among Swedish businesses in India, while regulatory complexity and other operating challenges remain areas identified by companies.

As global businesses reassess international investment strategies amid geopolitical and economic uncertainty, the survey provides an indication of continued confidence in India’s market from the Swedish business community.
