Bangkok is declared an emergency zone by the Thai prime minister after a building collapses due to an earthquake in Myanmar. Authorities organize security troops, send out statewide notifications, and advise the people through media and SMS. Transportation, hospitals, and airports are ready. High-rises should be avoided, the Thai Public Relations Department posted on X.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), a 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar on Friday. At approximately 12:50 p.m. local time, the tremor struck 10 km below the surface of Sagaing city, 16 kilometers northwest.
Witnesses reported that water poured out of swimming pools as people fled into the streets in terror after the shocks.
As soon as the house began to tremble, we all fled. In before of my eyes, a five-story skyscraper collapsed. One witness told Reuters, “Everyone in my town is out on the road, and nobody dares to go back inside buildings.”
Tremors were also reported in southwest Yunnan province of China, according to Beijing’s quake agency. Tremors with a magnitude of 7.9 were reported.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi reacts
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, meanwhile, voiced his alarm over the earthquake and requested that the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) get in touch with the Thai and Myanmar government.
“Apprehensive about the circumstances following the earthquake in Thailand and Myanmar.” I am praying for everyone’s health and safety. India is prepared to help in every way it can. We requested that our officials remain vigilant in this regard. Additionally, PM Modi requested that the MEA maintain communication with the governments of Thailand and Myanmar, posting on X.
Indian embassy releases helpline number
The Indian embassy in Bangkok provided its residents with a helpline number.
“The Embassy is actively monitoring the situation in conjunction with the Thai authorities following strong earthquake shocks that were registered in Bangkok and other parts of Thailand. No unfortunate event involving an Indian national has been reported as of yet. Indian nationals in Thailand are encouraged to call the emergency number +66 618819218 in the event of an emergency, the Indian embassy posted on X.
