This was MI’s second game—and second loss—of the season, but Hardik made his first appearance because he was suspended for the team’s first game. MI’s slow over-rate against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in their final IPL 2024 match was the reason for the punishment. However, since the IPL has eliminated the clause that imposes bans for repeated over-rate offenses, MI and Hardik were spared a more severe punishment this time. Teams are now subject to in-game field restrictions and monetary sanctions instead.

This was the IPL 2025 season’s first slow over-rate penalty, and it was given following the ninth game.

This was the IPL 2025 season’s first slow over-rate penalty, and it was given following the ninth game.

With Trent Boult, Deepak Chahar, Satyanarayana Raju, and Hardik himself leading a pace-heavy attack, MI took longer than expected to finish their overs.

Prior to the game, MI chose to bowl first after winning the toss.

With a 78-run partnership, GT openers Sai Sudarshan and Shubman Gill (38 in 27 balls, four boundaries, and a six) got the side off to a great start. Jos Buttler (39 in 24 balls, five fours, and a six) and Sudarshan shared another half-century partnership. Sudarshan scored 63 runs in 41 balls, including two sixes and four boundaries. GT experienced a mini-collapse in the final stages, being limited to 196/8 in 20 overs after starting at 179/4.

MI’s best bowler was captain Hardik Pandya (2/29), with wickets taken by Trent Boult, Deepak Chahar, Mujeeb ur Rahman, and Satyanarayana Raju.

MI lost Ryan Rickelton and Rohit Sharma (8) early in the 197-run chase. Suryakumar Yadav (48 in 28 balls, with a four and four sixes) and Tilak Varma (39 in 36 balls, with three fours and a six) attempted to battle it out for MI with a 62-run partnership. MI lost their stride after being dismissed and were only able to reach 160/6 in 20 overs.

The two best bowlers for GT were Mohammed Siraj (2/34) and Prasidh Krishna (2/18). Sai Kishore and Kagiso Rabada both claimed a wicket. (ANI)
