Mumbai Police paid comedian Kunal Kamra a surprise visit on Monday after he was criticized for making a “traitor” joke about Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde at a comedy gig. Officers showed up at his Mahim home to “check” his availability after he ignored many summonses and did not show up as scheduled.
Khar police have summoned Kunal Kamra twice for his remarks against Eknath Shinde since filing a formal case against him on March 24 in response to Shiv Sena MLA Murji Patel’s complaint. It should be mentioned that in his comic presentation, the comedian failed to identify the deputy chief minister.
Kunal Kamra, who has not resided in his Mahim home for ten years, responded to the development by calling it a waste of time and money. In an Instagram post, Kunal Kamra stated, “It is a waste of your time and public resources to go to an address where I have not lived for the past ten years.”
A Khar police squad visited Kunal Kamra’s home in Mahim, where his family resides, to see if he would be involved in the investigation. Since he didn’t, a decision regarding the next steps will be made shortly,” an official stated.
On March 28, the Madras High Court granted Kunal Kamra temporary anticipatory bail, subject to his executing a bond satisfactory to the judicial magistrate at Vanur in Tamil Nadu’s Villupuram district. The comedian claimed that he was afraid of being arrested by Mumbai Police and that he had been “normally a resident of this State (Tamil Nadu) since moving here from Mumbai in 2021.
Rahool Kanal, a Shiv Sena official who was detained for damaging The Habitat studio following Kunal Kamra’s performance, stated on Monday that when Kamra visits Mumbai, he will be greeted “Shiv Sena-style.”
On March 23, Rahool Kanal and eleven other Shiv Sainiks were taken into custody after they looted the studio where Kamra did his stand-up routine.
