On Friday, US President Donald Trump praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and said he was a “very smart man” and a “great friend.” He also expressed optimism about the ongoing tariff negotiations between the US and India. During Alina Habba’s swearing-in ceremony as US attorney for New Jersey, Trump spoke to media and praised PM Modi’s leadership, calling him a “great prime minister.”
Trump remarked, “Prime Minister Modi was here just now, and we have always been very good friends.” One of the countries with the highest tariffs in the world is India. They are quite intelligent. I consider PM Modi to be a very intelligent man and a good friend. Our conversations were excellent. India and our nation will get along great, in my opinion. Additionally, he said, “I want to say that your prime minister is excellent.”
Trump’s comments came after Modi visited the US in February, when the two leaders declared their intention to deepen economic connections between the two countries by negotiating the first phase of a multi-sector Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) by the fall of 2025.
Trump announced a 25 percent duty on all imported cars entering the US on Thursday, describing the decision as “very exciting” for home manufacturing and a significant policy step from the White House. The levy, which is scheduled to go into effect on April 2, will affect over half of all cars sold in the US, including those made by American automakers abroad. The goal of the legislation is to incentivize automakers to increase their output in the US.
