While most of India will have above-normal temperatures, with the exception of some areas in the South and Northeast, northwest India will see a severe summer with 10–12 heatwave days.

When does IMD sound heatwave alert?Temperatures to soar in North India

This season, Northwest India is expected to see almost twice as many heatwave days as usual, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). This year, there will likely be 10 to 12 hot days in the area, compared to the usual five to six.

IMD scientist Soma Sen Roy stated, “We are expecting slightly above normal heatwave conditions, especially over West and Central India. Generally, Northwest India sees around 5 to 6 heatwave days. This year, we expect 10 to 12 days, which is double the normal.” However, she clarified that this is a seasonal projection and does not imply that every day of the season will be abnormally hot.

She added that although the forecast indicates above-normal temperatures on a larger scale, the IMD will keep improving forecasts with daily and extended-range updates for more accurate local information.

Regarding whether 2025 will top 2024, which was India’s hottest year ever, the IMD remained silent. There were 554 heatwave days in the nation last year.

When does IMD sound heatwave alert?

The IMD defines a heatwave as one in which the highest temperature in the plains is at least 40 degrees Celsius or five degrees higher than usual.

The majority of India will see above-normal maximum and minimum temperatures, according to the most recent Seasonal Heat Outlook for March to May 2025, which was published on February 28. On the other hand, temperatures in isolated sections of the Northeast and some parts of the southernmost Peninsular India may be close to or slightly below normal.

“With the exception of a few isolated southernmost regions of Peninsular India, where normal minimum temperatures are likely, most parts of the country are expected to experience above-normal minimum temperatures during the season (MAM),” the prediction said.

Temperatures to soar in North India

North India is expected to warm even more in the days ahead, with temperatures in Delhi and the surrounding areas expected to rise by 1-2 degrees Celsius. However, because to Rajasthani dust-raising winds, north-westerly breezes will cause a sudden dip of 3–4 degrees. Over the following three days, these winds, which are blowing at 20 to 30 km/h, will scour Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan, causing dry and dusty conditions.
